Humane Landlord

We received a call from a distressed landlord. He was at his wits end. He had a family of raccoons living in the attic of one of his properties. The mother and babies had lived there awhile before being detected. A stench did develop in the building and his tenants were quite upset and wanted them removed immediately. None of the people wanted the family destroyed. The landlord is a very compassionate man and researched alternatives until he was given our number.

We reassured him that raccoons usually have 2-3 den sites in the area and they will usually pick one that is the most comfortable and in which they feel the safest. All he had to do was make the mother feel uncomfortable and unsafe then she would move her young to an alternate den site.

He was relieved that there were solutions to the problem without harm to the animals. It was snowing at the time, so he decided to wait until the next evening when the weather improved.

He put a light up, let mom see him and followed all of the ideas we had given him. Mother refused to be intimidated, because she was warm and comfortable.

Nothing we tried worked those first few days and the tenants were losing their patience. The landlord was adamant about not trapping the family, even live trapping was unacceptable.

Finally, after increase harassment, the family moved. But the stench was left behind. We recommend peppermint oil to help until the scent wore off.
